2015 AIMES MUSIC WINNER

For the past two years, I have been working towards a degree in opera studies at UCLA and I am pleased to announce that on the 16th of June I graduated with a Masters of Music in Classical Voice (Performance).

The penultimate task in this degree was a lead role in the contemporary opera Mansfield Park, based on the Jane Austen novel, in which I played the antagonist Mary Crawford. It was performed in the charming William Andrews Clark Library which (fun fact) was the inspiration behind the library design in the original Disney animated movie Beauty and the Beast. I have attached some pictures of the building and professional pictures from the dress rehearsal. The final show was also recorded and I shall send this onto you once the school has finished up with editing.

I have also provided below links from the opera Cendrillon (Cinderella) which I performed with UCLA in February.

Finally this coming Thursday I will be performing my Masters recital which I've called 'Home and Away'. It is a recital comprised of songs from New Zealand, France, Spain, Austria and England, where composers and poets reflect on or describe the cities that they loved and called home. It will be available to watch via live stream at 2.30pm this Thursday the 21st September.

If you would like to watch please click the below link and then, in the box on the right hand side, select "Popper Theater" and it should come up automatically.

Following the completion of my degree requirements Professor Peter Kazaras, director of Opera Studies at UCLA, recommended that I audition for several Young Artist Programs with companies such as; Los Angeles Opera, Washington National Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Wolf Trap Opera and for Artist Diploma programs with; The Juilliard School, YALE School of Music, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Curtis Institute of Music and RICE University Shepherd School of Music. The applications for these programs have recently been submitted and I hope to be embarking on an audition tour this October in order to find further study or work which will enable me to extend my stay in the United States so that I can continue gaining experience and educating myself in the professional world of opera.

I actually just heard word from Wolf Trap Opera yesterday that they are requesting that I come for a live audition, which is very exciting!

Moments, like these, serve as reminders that I have been incredibly fortunate to have been able to focus on my studies and that I have been able to do so a result of the generosity from the North Harbour Club. I hope to continue making strides post UCLA and update you with my progress.

Warm regards,

Emily
