2016 Junior Excellence Winner

An update on Nadia's athletics season...

Nadia had a season full of injuries (hip flexor) due to a growth spurt and was unable to do much club night running. This prevented her from being truly race fit this past season. We had to nurse her through the season and she only competed at major events, as well as competing in Australia. The true champion she is we think she did extremely well under the circumstances.

Auckland Athletics Intermediate School Championships:

Winner of 100m, 200m and Long Jump. She broke both the 100m and 200m Auckland Intermediate records for Year 7.
She was awarded the Year 7 Athletics trophy and the Outstanding Skills trophy at Northcross Intermediate.

North Island Colgate Games:

Gold      100m
Gold      200m
Gold      400m
Bronze  Long Jump

Auckland Championships:

Gold       100m
Gold      200m
Silver     Long Jump

Australian Championships:

Nadia had to compete in the under 14yr old category being only 12yrs old and running against the best in Australia and the South Pacific. She only ran in the heat of the 200m but was unable to qualify for the final.

She was a finalist in the 100m, placing 6th with a PB of 12.82s and set a new North Harbour Bays club record. Nadia’s preparation leading into this competition was far from ideal due to her injuries but the experience was fantastic and Nadia was also able to support fellow adult competitors from NZ, including fellow AIMES award winner Eliza McCartney. When we return to Australia sometime in the future we hope to be fully fit and ready to go.

12/13 Yr Inter-Provincials:

Nadia was chosen to be part of the 12/13 yr Auckland Inter-Provincials team who competed in Masterton at Easter. There were about 14 teams from all over NZ and each team had 11 athletes of both males and females in the 2 age groups. They each competed in 4 events and the top 6 placed athletes in each event earned points for their team. Nadia competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m and Long Jump. The Auckland team placed 1st overall for the first time in more than 10 years. Nadia placed 2nd overall out of about 150 girls in her age group. In the 400m she ran a PB of 1:01.04s.

North Harbour Bays Prize-giving:

Nadia received recognition for the club record she broke in the 100m.
Club Champion trophy for her age group for the 6th year in a row.
3rd Age Grade Champion – This is based on your personal bests in all events. Great to get third considering there were 3 events she did not compete in all season.
Awarded the John Hamlin Trophy for the best performance at the North Island Colgate Games. This was the 3rd year in a row Nadia has won this trophy and the 4th time overall.

We are extremely proud of how Nadia coped this season with many trips to the physio and lots of rehabilitation exercises to do. We think her results are still great taking everything into consideration. Nadia and her coach, Steve Erkkila, continued to work well as a team and he was able to help nurse Nadia through her injuries so she could still compete at the major events. Nadia is currently injury free and enjoying the off season playing netball and hockey for Northcross Intermediate. She is in the 2nd team for netball and the 1st team for hockey. As part of the hockey team she will represent Northcross Intermediate at the Aims Games in Tauranga.

Nadia is looking forward to the next athletics season and doing the thing she most loves to do.

We would once again like to thank the North Harbour Club for all their support and hope to continue this relationship long into the future.

Kind regards,

Sharna, Mike and Nadia
